14 September 2026; 13:00-14:00 GMT+1
Presenter: Dr Edoardo Borgomeo
Join us for a session of MCRILG with Dr Edoardo Borgomeo, University of Cambridge and Global Environment Facility. Edoardo is the Coordinating Lead Author for Chapter 16 (Water) of Working Group II of the IPCC 7th Assessment Report. His research and professional interests include water policy, climate change adaptation in the water sector; transboundary waters; climate risk management.
Dr Borgomeo will explore his analysis of the paradoxes shaping water security, inviting participants to think critically about why well‑intentioned solutions can sometimes worsen the problems they aim to solve.
Using real-world examples, the talk will unpack four key paradoxes: value, supply, efficiency, and data and show how tensions between economics, governance, behaviour, engineering, and environmental systems shape water outcomes. The discussion will encourage participants to question dominant assumptions, reflect on trade-offs, and consider how adopting a “paradox thinking” approach can support more realistic, context-specific, and effective strategies for addressing water risks and governance challenges
