Assessing Livelihood Vulnerability to Extreme Shocks<\/p>\n

The global food system is facing multiple shocks, from pandemics to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the increasing frequency of extreme weather events due to climate\u00a0<\/span>change. At the same time, there is persistent inequality in food\u00a0<\/span>distribution, with millions of people undernourished globally. How\u00a0<\/span>can we build a food system that is resilient to shocks, supports\u00a0<\/span>farmer livelihoods and improves food security globally?<\/span><\/p>\n

People are integral to the food system. Modelling the impacts of\u00a0<\/span>climate change on crops and developing new crop varieties is one\u00a0<\/span>piece of the puzzle, but how do these results relate to people\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>livelihoods, their ability to adopt new farming practices and their\u00a0<\/span>food security on the ground? Linking information on crop\u00a0<\/span>vulnerability to information on people\u2019s vulnerability, their\u00a0<\/span>livelihoods, what they produce, consume and sell, is a key part of\u00a0<\/span>understanding the food system’s vulnerability to shocks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Run jointly by The Pearl Academy and\u00a0<\/span>Evidence for Development<\/a>, this course will teach you how quantitative data on people’s\u00a0<\/span>livelihoods can be collected, analysed and integrated in an\u00a0<\/span>interdisciplinary framework with information from food and climate\u00a0<\/span>science, to support a system-wide analysis of food system resilience<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Through a combination of interactive exercises, group and\u00a0<\/span>pair work, videos, expert panels and presentations, you will be able to<\/span>analyse livelihoods data for yourself, consider its application in your<\/span>own research and learn how to set up and implement a field-based study.<\/span><\/p>\n

Programme Structure<\/h2>\n

The course runs over three days. Each day, there are two, two-hour sessions: a morning session and an afternoon session. There will be homework set each day that will take around an hour to complete.<\/p>\n
